Scholarships for New Transfer Students

Scholarships for new transfer students admitted to the A. James Clark School of Engineering are awarded annually by the Clark School of Engineering and the academic departments. Students must complete the online scholarship application each year to be considered for Clark School Scholarships.

The 2017-2018 application is available online by clicking here.  For best consideration, please submit your application by the priority deadline of  Wednesday, May 31, 2017.

Scholarship applications are reviewed by the student's major department and at the college level (if the student's major is undecided) after spring grades are posted. Applicants will be considered for every scholarship administered by the Clark School for which they are eligible. Only students receiving a scholarship will be notified.  Notification usually begins in mid-July. Please be aware that scholarship funding for the college changes each year.  Students receiving scholarship funding one year may not receive the same or any funding in future years.

We strongly encourage students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as many engineering scholarships have a financial need requirement.  The University of Maryland priority deadline for FAFSA is January 1st each year.

Before you begin the 2017-2018 online engineering scholarship application, you should:

  1. Prepare a complete resume or curriculum vitae. The resume does not have to be one page for the scholarship application. Need help writing a resume? - look at "Resumes and References" from Engineering Co-op & Career Services.  Your resume or CV must be submitted in PDF or MS Word format. A PDF preserves your formatting; whereas, the formatting in MS Word can change.
  2. Plan your responses to two short statements (maximum 500 words per statement). Write professionally using good grammar, spelling and punctuation.  In addition to being reviewed by the Clark School, you could be nominated for external scholarships provided by corporations or engineering organizations. We nominate students whose applications have a professional appearance.

The short statements are:

  • Describe any financial considerations affecting your ability to attend the University of Maryland.
  • Describe your engineering interests and career plans. How you became interested in engineering, what interests you about your major, your plans after graduation, and what you hope to do with your engineering degree.

Please note that once you begin the scholarship application, you must complete it. You will not be able to partially complete the application, save it and return to it later.

Thanking Your Scholarship Donor

The scholarship program in the A. James Clark School of Engineering is funded through generous contributions made by our alumni, industry partners, and friends of the college.  It is important to acknowledge those contributions that help ease the financial burden of attending college for so many engineering students.  Scholarship donors are also interested in learning about the students they support.  We ask that all scholarship recipients write a thank you letter to the donors of their scholarship awards.  To assist you in writing an appropriate and professional-looking thank you letter, we have prepared a handout entitled "Thanking Your Scholarship Donor" (pdf).
